Today’s a big day for public safety reform advocates: nearly 90 people are gathering in Salem for Lobby Day, representing 21 cities and 45 legislative districts across Oregon!
Over the last five years, we have advanced approaches to public safety that invest in local communities instead of prisons. These policies support investments in programs for justice-involved people and crime survivors, expanding services that help people transform their lives.
As a result, we’ve effectively maintained public safety while preventing two prisons from opening — one in Junction City and a second prison for women.
The savings amount to millions of dollars, a portion of which funds public safety programs across the state, including mental health services, addiction treatment, and crime prevention. Local investment have also added nearly $9 million to community-based crime survivor services, ensuring that more people have the resources they need to heal and transform their lives.
These policies are the right path for safety and justice in Oregon.
