Violence has no place in our politics, our schools, or our communities. Each one of us deserves to come home safely to our families and loved ones, but our nation mourns another tragic shooting caused by President Trump’s attack on immigrants.
Partnership for Safety & Justice is deeply concerned by reports that federal agents shot two people in East Portland. Our hearts are with the victims and their families, as well as our neighbors currently living in fear.
We must be clear: Federal violence is not an anomaly. These are predictable outcomes of a law enforcement system that has long treated Black and brown lives as disposable. These tactics have been used for decades.
What occurred in Portland should never have happened, and we are outraged that federal agents were deployed in a way that resulted in people being shot in their own neighborhood. Coupled with the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a mother, wife and widow of a military veteran, in Minneapolis, these incidents signal a dangerous normalization of deadly force by the federal government—directed at the very communities it claims to protect.
We reject the false, reckless claim that somehow public safety involves day-to-day civilian harm. We stand with Mayor Wilson in calling for ICE to halt all operations in Portland until a full, independent investigation is completed and the public is given clear, credible answers. We stand with Governor Kotek, Oregon’s federal delegation, our state representatives, and the other elected officials demanding full accountability for this preventable tragedy. We are in full support of Attorney General Dan Rayfield’s ODOJ investigation.
An independent and transparent investigation with full involvement from state and local officials is essential. We also demand that our state and local elected officials do everything in their power to remove federal agents from our communities immediately. Accountability is essential—not only for those directly harmed, but to prevent further violence and create a sense of trust in our institutions.
In solidarity,
All of us at Safety and Justice
