- Open letter with “Dear State Representative _______, or Dear State Senator_______”
- Mention immediately if you are a constituent. (“As a resident of District xx, I…”)
- Cover only one subject per letter. Include Bill # if you know it, and specifically say if you support or oppose that bill.
- Stick to one-two key points about how/why you support or oppose specific legislation. If relevant, mention how it impacts their district. A brief personal statement (1-2 sentences maximum) can help them see the importance of the issue.
- Mention their stand if you know that they have already taken a position.
- Request a reply.
- Check your letter for length. One page letters are more likely to be read in their entirety. Two page letters are likely to be just scanned.
- Mail your letter right away. The only effective letter is one that is written and mailed!
- Follow- up to replies. Thank legislators for their support.
- Send us a copy or, if it ’s by email, bcc us. Let us know if follow up information if needed.
You’ve just made a difference!
