By January 2007, the number of people in Idaho’s prisons reached 7,116, with the number on parole and probation at 12,296. These are some of the statistics recently released by the Idaho Department of Correction in its 2007 Executive Summary [1].
Of the 7,116 people in prison, 4,750 were in state-run prisons, 1,500 were in a privately- run prison in Idaho, 430 people were in private prisons outside of Idaho, and 450 state prisoners were in county jails. The prisons were projected to grow by 40 prisoners a month between 2007 and 2010. Finally, the executive summary also included some information about the effectiveness of the state’s prison programs. Of people on parole, people who had completed the state’s cognitive change program succeeded on parole at a higher rate than those who did not. People going through a therapeutic community program were 21% more likely to succeed on parole.
