Safety and Sentencing Prison Program Crime Survivors Beyond Barriers

PSJ Event Featured in Eugene Register-Guard

More than 100 people, and six legislators, attended the Partnership for Safety and Justice’s Community Conversation with Your Legislators in Eugene, Oregon, this last Saturday, January 27th. The Eugene Register-Guard was there and reported on the event, "Changes in prisons urged," quoting our executive director David Rogers:

“There is recognition that our current state strategy hasn’t made us any safer, but it has been very expensive.”

Oregon’s expanding prison population (up over 230% since 1990) and heavy spending (proposed $1.38 billion this biennium) makes us the third-fastest growing prison system in the nation.

Attendees and legislators agreed that change is needed. The Partnership for Safety and Justice is supporting two bills aimed at how young people ages 15-17 are tried under Measure 11 and is also active in the budget process, looking for an increase in funds for prison programs that reduce recidivism and assist with re-entry.
